Edward Hett, a young inventor from Chicago now profligate with financial wealth from the sale of his multicolor printing press patent, purchased an old seaside wood frame hotel just off Beach Lane, which was starting to be known as Cedar Grove Avenue, as the end featured a spectacular cropping of cedars that had been a popular strolling site since the 1700s.
